What These Numbers Cannot Tell You
This site computes glide ratios, wing loading, sink and climb rates, wind components and harness bands. It is worth being explicit about what none of them can do, because in free flight the gap between a number and a decision is where people get hurt.
Nothing here is a go/no-go decision
The wind window calculator will report "within guidance" when two numbers sit below two other numbers. It has not seen the sky, the windsock, the cycle, the rotor coming off the terrain upwind, or the pilot.
Launch decisions are made on the hill, in person, by people who know the site — and by pilots trained through supervised practice to read what is in front of them. A calculator's "within guidance" means one particular objection is absent. It does not mean there is a reason to fly.
Every band here is general and conservative
The pilot-level wind limits, the wing-loading categories, the thermal and sink strength labels and the harness size bands are all general recreational context. None is a certification standard, none is a site rule, and none overrides your instructor, your club, or the manufacturer's placard on your specific equipment.
Where the general guidance and the specific authority disagree, the specific authority is right. That is not a disclaimer formality — the general figure was written without knowing your wing, your site or you.
Averages conceal what matters
A thermal averaging 1.67 m/s might be 4 m/s in the core and nothing at the edge. A steady 15 km/h wind reading says nothing about the gust factor. A polar glide ratio assumes smooth air and a precise airspeed you are probably not holding.
In each case the number is real and the thing it averages over is not uniform — and the non-uniformity is usually the part that matters to the decision.
Reading is not learning
The most important limit. Descriptions of technique — including any on this site — are not training. The entry to most manoeuvres is simpler to describe than the exit, and the risk concentrates in the recovery, which is exactly the part a description cannot teach.
Free flight is learned through a certified school, with an instructor, on a progression, with supervised practice — and rapid-descent and recovery skills specifically through a properly-run SIV course over water with a safety boat. There is no reading path to those skills, and a pilot who attempts them from a description is taking on a real and avoidable risk.
What the tools are actually for
Understanding, on the ground, before and after flights.
Working out that a 20 km/h headwind halves your effective glide is worth knowing at the planning table. Discovering that your all-up weight has crept 8 kg since you bought the wing is worth knowing in the garage. Comparing this season's climb rates against last season's is worth doing at a desk.
All of that builds the judgement you then use in the air, taught by someone qualified to teach it. That is the whole intended use, and it is a modest and real one.
Why a calculator can feel more authoritative than it is
Numbers carry an implied precision. "4.55:1" and "within guidance" both read as findings, and they are outputs of arithmetic on inputs you supplied — no more certain than the inputs and no more informed than the model.
That effect is worth naming because it operates quietly. A pilot who has computed something is more confident than one who has not, and the confidence attaches to the decision rather than to the calculation. In an activity where the consequences of misplaced confidence are physical, that is a hazard in itself.
The corrective is to be specific about what each number answered. A ground glide of 4.55:1 answers "how far, if the wind is steady at 20 km/h and the air is otherwise neutral and my measured glide is right". It does not answer "can I get there".
The failure mode to watch for in yourself
The one worth guarding against is using arithmetic to argue past an instinct. If the day feels wrong and the numbers say it is within guidance, the numbers have not resolved anything — they have simply failed to object, which is a much weaker statement.
Experienced pilots describe standing down on days that looked fine on paper, and the reasoning is usually something they could not have computed. That judgement is what training builds, and it should outrank a calculator every time the two disagree.

Use these tools where they are strong: on the ground, before and after, to understand relationships and to build a picture of your own flying and your own site over time.
